How to persuade people using motivational interviewing?
Imaging a person that you want to advise him/her to do or not to do something.
I image I was advising my wife to sleep earlier, because she take care our baby at home and often sleep too late.
1. Ask her an open question about the behaviour?
For example, “Why you do that? I would like to hear how to you think that sincerely?”
For my case, I would talk to my wife, “Dear, sleeping too late may not good for the baby. Recently I found you often sleep too late, there must be some reason in it, I want to hear you the reasons, why not sleep earlier?”;
2. Listening her reasons sincerely.
For example, she may speak several causes, some reason you may want to know more. If so, ask her the question.
Listening means you understand her meaning and know her emotion.
3. Affirm her desire and ability to change. And guide her to find her changing reason.
Such as “I believe you totally have the ability to make a good choice”, “You must want to make some changes.”
4. Make a specific plan for it.
If she found her changing reason finally, the latest step is to make a plan.
The key of motivational interviewing is to let people find their changing reason.
